CJAY 92: Katie

I have finally found my inspiration again! After long holiday hours at work things have now settled down and I am dying to get back into freelance work. To celebrate this I have decided to post a few blog posts featuring the lovely ladies that I worked with last fall for the CJAY 92 calendar shoot!

This posting is all about Katie, not only a beautiful girl but also a member of a local rock band here in Calgary! To match her personality I went for a beautiful purple smokey eye, and lots of lashes. Check out the photos and let me know what you think!

Probably my favorite shot!
Photography credits go to Dave Paduch, who works in Calgary and Edmonton. Check out more of his work here.

I must say it was a lot of fun to go through all of the photos and check out the shots that never make it out into public! It is very reassuring to know that even the most beautiful of women don't end up with every single photo being ready-for-viewing.

These shots were taken at a construction site about an hour outside of Calgary

Katie was featured in the CJAY 92 charity calendar, with all proceeds going to the CJAY 92 Kid's Fund.

Sinfilter Shoot 2

Just a quick peek at a photoshoot I did with George from Sinfilter Studios! He did some awesome photoshop work to give our shoot an even more awesome theme! I used the amazing Naked Palette from Urban Decay on her eyes and my favorite highlighter Copacobana from Nars! The wet look on her lids was achieved with a little bit of Vaseline!

Long time no post!!!!

It's been a long time since my last post! Not that it's an excuse, but I have been super busy working at Sephora at Market Mall as one of their makeup artists, and still doing freelance work on the side! Some exciting tidbits about what I've been up to: Several photoshoots with George at Sinfilter Studios, working on the Fall banner for CalgaryFashion.ca and doing some of the calendar girls for the upcoming CJAY 92 Charity calendar.

Below I have included some of my favorite shots from my shoot with Sinfilter Studios and model Jessy T. **Warning - some of these shots may be a little too risque for perusal at work!

George had some fun photo-shopping the photos for an ethereal look, but the overall look of the shoot was a very beautiful makeup so we could showcase her phoenix tattoo.

I had an amazing time working with everyone in this shoot, and I promise to update more often with more makeup looks that I have been working on! Don't forget to follow my page on Facebook Makeup by Jo!

Breath of fresh air!

Taking a break from my posts about the Vancouver IMATS I have the photos from my shoot with Photographer Maggie McKay! We had a fantastic model come out and wear a beautiful Grecian dress (even as it started to cool down!) and gorgeous jewel toned jewelery.

We wanted to play around with the bright colors in the jewelery and bring that up into the makeup. I used green and blue around the eyes, with a little bit of yellow for highlight. My trusty NARS Copacobana highlighter went onto the cheekbones, with a little bit of contouring.

The lips are an Elizabeth Arden pink, that I love because it is so vibrant! And I truly believe that anyone can wear a lipstick this bright, even if their first instinct is to shy away from it. For a more natural look, I would use natural tones on the lids with a little bit of liner rather than the bright tones that I used here.

We shot up on Nose Hill here in Calgary, which is why there is the beautiful clear sky behind our lovely model. I really hope to do more outside shoots, as they really create a different atmosphere.

Coming soon: More information on the 2011 Vancouver IMATS, as well as unseen photos from previous shoots and new photos from shoots here in Calgary!

IMATS: Part Two!

On the second day of IMATS there was so much going on that I need to break it into two posts! This first part will focus on the Student Competition Character/Prosthetic Category! Only one student from Blanche MacDonald made it into the final round, and she ended up placing second!
Congratulations Candice! 2nd Place!

The other competitors were all from the Vancouver Film School, and I tried to get photos of their works as well! This next character was by Leah Wilburn who won first place.

Unfortunately it was really hard to get good photos, so some of them are from the large screen that focused on the competitors. But you can still see the amazing work done! This next one didn't place, but reminded me of The Gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

This year's theme was "Mythical Creatures" and required all competitors to apply foam-latex prosthetic appliances. The competition was judged by Makeup Artist Magazine Editor Michael Key, and had a guest judge Steve Johnson, who gave a seminar on IMATS Day One on his career as a special effects makeup artist.

I had a really hard time getting good pictures of all the competitors, so I urge you to check out Candice's blog here, where she has several entries on the competition!

Coming soon: The Makeup Museum, MastersFX, and District 9!

IMATS: Part One!

I had the amazing chance to attend the 2011 Vancouver IMATS this past weekend, and I could not have had a better time! We got to check out tons of brands (all of which were having wicked show specials) such as Make Up For Ever, Crown Brushes, Royal & Langnickel, Cover FX and more! Not to mention we got to cheer on the Blanche MacDonald Students competing in the IMATS: Student Competition. One of which was Isabelle Champigny, my classmate from Blanche!

The theme was tribal beauty, and here is a closer look at Isabelle's makeup design! Points were given for design, technique, and overall look. Extra things like the outfit and hair definitely finished off a look!

Blanche took the top three spots for the Beauty/Fantasy Competition! Isabelle won third place, while Duk Soo Veronica Cho and Shawnna Downing from Blanche took home first and second respectively.

Other highlights of the day? We got to see demos done by almost every booth, especially the amazing demos by Jenna Kuchera and Timothy Hung for the Blanche MacDonald Center! Check out the lashes used in Timothy's demo above! Paperself zebra lashes!

We also had the chance to sit down and listen to presentations by the Vancouver local IATSE, a seminar by Eve Pearl,  and see more amazing makeup demos, including the mutant pig at the FameHog booth!

More on the IMATS coming soon! Check back for details on the Student Character/Prosthetic Competition, the makeup museum, the District 9 panel, and the MastersFX panel on True Blood and Fringe!

Biker Chic

The second part of my photoshoot collaboration with Dale Ewing, featuring our biker chick in Biker Chic. We took the model from a fresh-faced and wholesome look with long blonde hair to an edgy hottie. Dale cut her hair from past her collarbones to the shaggy short cut you see here.

To match her new image, I gave her a serious smokey eye. No soft colors here, I took the Aqua Color in Black from the Make Up Forever collection and blended it all around the eye. For a little bit of softness on the bottom I used my NARS Pandora shadow, so we could avoid a "raccoon" look.

I kept the lips nude by blocking them out with foundation, and adding a little bit of gloss. I used an eyebrow pencil to fill in her brows so they wouldn't get lost next to the harshness of the eyes. With a little bit of NARS Copacobana highlighter on top of the cheekbones and a light contour, the look came together.

Next time I do a Biker look I am bound and determined to find an actual bike we can shoot her on! Thanks again to Dale for bringing me in to do the makeup for his portfolio shoots! And as of this post you can "Like" my facebook page "Makeup by Jo"!

And next week you can check back to hear all about the Vancouver IMATS, where I will be going to support my Blanche MacDonald classmate Isabelle Champigny as she competes in the Student Competition. I'll include updates on the speakers at the show, fantastic deals, and the amazing people I will get to meet!
